Dr. Yates received a Bachelor of Science with a major in microbiology, and a Bachelor of Veterinary Science with honors at the University of Queensland, Australia. He was awarded the University Medal for academic achievement throughout his training in veterinary medicine. After graduating from his BVSc, Dr. Yates practiced as a small animal clinician and subsequently completed a small animal veterinary medicine internship at the Queensland Veterinary Specialist Centre with a focus in emergency medicine and critical care. In 2003 he was awarded a Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarship to undertake further training in the U.S.A. In September of 2006, he completed a PhD with Prof. David G. Russell in the field of Comparative Biomedical Science at Cornell University. He continued working with Dr. Russell as a postdoctoral associate until April 2008 when he started on faculty at the University of Calgary with a joint appointment to the Department of Comparative Biology and Experimental Medicine
